The business was originally established in 1970. Since then Millar & Co have developed a very high reputation as a retailer of Fine Food & Wine. The business is focussed very much on providing its discerning customer base with excellent wines, spirits, beer and gourmet food at competitive prices.  In 2005 the Auckland Retailers Association judged Millar & Co the best speciality food and beverage outlet in Auckland.

The store was extensively remodeled and re-branded in 1997 along the lines of the English wine merchants, Berry Bros & Rudd. Improvements included a beautiful native timber floor, a custom-built cedar cigar humidor and a walk-in, air-conditioned, fine wine cellar. This was the first cellar of its type built in Auckland and has enabled Millar & Co to store and age limited release wines for later sale to loyal customers.
